The mid day meal in Karnataka is served across six locations in the state. Akshaya Patra has two kitchens in Bengaluru (HK Hill and Vasanthapura), and one each in Ballari, Hubballi, Mangaluru and Mysuru. Each of these kitchens are centralised, and together feed 463,682 children across 2,629 schools every day. The HK Hill kitchen was Akshaya Patra's very first kitchen, opened in 2000, and the other Karnataka kitchens were soon opened in quick succession. The mid day meal menu in Karnataka has been modified to suit the South Indian palate and includes rice, rasam (a South Indian soup), dal (lentil curry), sambar (lentil based vegetable stew) and vegetable dishes.
